Product categories

Introduction

Product categories help you group your products inside the reports. Because RapidBar’s reports are displaying the information in alphabetical order, category names will dictate the order in which the information is displayed.

Examples and best practices

Use parent categories prefixes

In the following example, we’ll group our product categories so that the alcools appear first followed by food items.

  • Alcool – Spirits – Whiskey and Scotch
  • Alcool – Spirits – Gin
  • Alcool – Spirits – Vodka
  • Alcool – Spirits – Rhum
  • Alcool – Spirits – Others
  • Alcool – Wines – White
  • Alcool – Wines – Red
  • Alcool – Wines – Sparkling
  • Alcool – Beers – Bottled and cans
  • Alcool – Beers – Draugh
  • Food – Meat – Poultry
  • Food – Meat – Red meat
  • Food – Meat – Fish and seafood
  • Food – Dairy
  • Food – Fruits and vegetables
  • Etc.

Use numbers as prefixes

Alternatively, a numbering system can also be used to order categories and their display in report:

  • 010 – Whiskey and Scotch
  • 020 – Spirits – Gin
  • 030 – Spirits – Vodka
  • 040 – Spirits – Rhum
  • 050 – Spirits – Others
  • 060 – Wines – White
  • 070 – Wines – Red
  • 080 – Wines – Sparkling
  • 090 – Beers – Bottled and cans
  • 100 – Beers – Draugh
  • 110 – Meat – Poultry
  • 120 – Meat – Red meat
  • 130 – Meat – Fish and seafood
  • 140 – Dairy
  • 150 – Fruits and vegetables
  • Etc.

In the above example, the numbering was spaced out intentionally by 10 (100, 110, 120, etc) between each category to leave room to add new categories in between some of the existing ones later without having to re-number every previous categories.

Other settings

The category editor also allow you to customize the variance setting at which the values will display in red in the variance report. That way, you can select different alert levels for individual categories.
